Never underestimate the power and scope of social media to attract clients – even from a distance. That marketing lesson was reinforced when a homeowner in Virginia contacted Chicago-based designers and makers of custom cabinets O’Brien Harris to inquire about an Instagram post by the firm.
Ann Stockard, senior designer at O’Brien Harris took on the task to create a traditional and timeless kitchen and bath for the client – an influencer; her husband, a NHL athlete; and their three children – that would complement the home’s French-inspired architecture. Stockard said, “Great bones define this old home, especially with the curved ceiling details and crown molding in the primary bath.”
The existing wall between the family room and kitchen was opened up to join the spaces. A header in the new opening was clad in the same oak used for the custom cabinets, which are the focal point of the back wall of the kitchen.
“My favorite part of the kitchen is the Character Oak cabinetry, in our London Oak finish. The knots and imperfections in the wood bring an organic quality to the cabinets that is warm and friendly,” said the designer. “The painted cabinets have a hand-brushed finish that adds texture to the space. These are sprayed at our factory and back-brushed by hand for an artesian feel.”
The cabinets aren’t just visually arresting; they are designed and located to optimize the function of the kitchen. Cabinets set on the worktop flank the range and keep small appliances hidden, but still easily accessible, thanks to pocket doors that slide completely out of the way when open. Interior outlets allow appliances to stay plugged in and ready for use.
Everything needed is on hand while cooking at the range. Oils and vinegars and utensils are located below the counter immediately to the left and right of the range. On the island, the O’Brien Harris team created a custom workstation sink fitted with sliding cutting board, tilt-out sponge storage and drying racks.
